- If the power goes out, food will stay good in an unopened refrigerator for about for hours. Have a thermometer for the refrigerator, and if temp exceeds forty degrees for four hours, food is presumed bad
- Alternative cooking sources include barbecues and camp stoves. Don't use in an enclosed area
- Home survival kit
- Supplies for at least a week
- Store in plastic tub or trash can in shed or garage—not basement
- 1 gal/person/week water (21 gal/week for us)
- Store in a cool place, rotate every 6 months
- Rinse plastic containers with a 10% bleach solution. Don't use milk or chemical containers.
- Include food your family will eat
- Avoid foods that make you thirsty
- Salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals, canned foods with high liquid content
