# Fire Suppression and Utility Control [[R2.01 NETs — Neighborhood Emergency Teams 20231023|NETs]] extinguish small fires, remove fuel sources to prevent additional fires, shut off utilities, and assist with evacuations when necessary - Always work with a buddy - Always use proper safety equipment - Helmet - Boots - Eye protection - ==[[R2.01 NETs — Neighborhood Emergency Teams 20231023|NETs]] **are not** trained to deal with hazardous materials.== ```mermaid graph TD; A(Fuel)-->B(Oxygen)-->C(Heat)-->A; ``` ## Fire Types Letter designations are official and are depicted on fire extinguishers to indicate which fires they'll suppress. Numbers refer to capacity. A "small fire" is a fire confined to a single location. If *anything else* catches fire, it's no longer a small one. ### A. Ordinary combustibles - Wood and paper - Use 1A to 40A extinguisher ### B. Flammable liquids - Gas and alcohol - Use 1B to 640B extinguisher ### C. Energized electrical equipment ### D. Combustible metals ### K. Cooking Oils ## Fire Size-Up - Do we have the right equipment? - Fire alarms - Sprinklers - Portable Extinguishers - Interior wet standpipes (which [[R2.01 NETs — Neighborhood Emergency Teams 20231023|NETs]] should not operate) - Are there other hazards? - Smoke is a major hazard because smoke and moisture creates acid. - Is the building structurally sound? - Can my buddy and I escape? - Can we fight the fire safely? ## Fire Extinguishers - Check the gauge for green ### Type of Material - Water (Do not use on [[#C. Energized electrical equipment]]!) - Dry chemical - CO2 - Specialized ### P.A.S.S. - **P**ull the pin - **A**im the nozzle at the material that's burning - **S**queeze the handle (at least once before approaching the fire to ensure the fire extinguisher has charge) - Before discharging the fire extinguisher, have your buddy assume a support stance with their hand on your shoulder to pull you back in case of danger - **S**weep the fire area. ## Natural Gas Hazards - Asphyxiant; heavier than air - Explosive - Install natural gas detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, testing twice a year - Locate and label shutoffs (and have a non-sparking shutoff tool) ## Chemical Hazards Chemical warning labels for storage consist of four colored squares containing numbers or symbols. Numbers represent scale of hazard from 0 to 4. - Blue = health hazard - Red = fire hazard - Yellow = reactivity hazard - White = special hazard Chemical warning labels for transit have colors, numbers, and symbols to relate the hazard contained within. Each has a number desig ## L.I.E.S. - **L**imit hazardous chemicals - **I**solate them from each other - **E**liminate unnecessary chemicals from your household - **S**eparate them from each other - For instance, if ammonia and bleach occupy the same shelf but then fall off during an earthquake, the resulting reaction can create chlorine gas --- - [[N2.21 Portland NET Basic Training Index 20240120|Portland NET Basic Training]] - [[N2 NETs Final Field Exercise — Fire Suppression 20240209|Final Field Exercise — Fire Suppression Station]]
