# Heat Stroke
- Most serious; body's temperature rises, sweat stops functioning properly, and body is unable to calm down. **Risk of death or permanent disability**
- Children and elderly people are most susceptible to heat stroke.
## Symptoms
- Confusion and/or loss of consciousness
- Seizure
- Rapid, weak pulse, shallow breathing
- Hot, red, or dry skin
- Not sweating or excessive sweating
- Abnormally high body temperature
## Treatment
- Call 911 (if possible) and stay with person until help arrives
- Remove from hot environment immediately, moving to a shaded cool area and removing outer clothing layers
- Fan the air around the body
- ==Conflicting directions—seek medical assistance!!==
- Cool slowly with compresses and *slowly* drinking water.
- No food or water if vomiting, though
- Cool as rapidly as possible with cold water or ice bath and/or wetting their skin with cold wet cloths on head, neck, armpits and groins
