## Introduction/What to Do During an Earthquake

- If indoors
- Drop and cover beneath desk or other furniture. If no furniture nearby, crouch near wall
- Stay clear of heavy things that might fall and glass
- If in bed, stay in bed
- Avoid interior doorways
- Brake a wheelchair
- If driving, stay in car
- Move to side of road and stop away from structures or objects that may fall
- When shaking stops
- First, check for injuries and get first aid
- Then, help injured or trapped people. Check on neighbors
- Don't move seriously injured people unless they are in immediate further danger
- Use the stairs
- Check for hazards like fire, gas leaks, downed utility lines, or fallen objects
- Put on long pants, long sleeves, tough bots and sturdy gloves to protect against debris
- Clean up spilled flammable liquids and medicine immediately
- Leave the area if you smell gas or fumes from other chemicals
- Expect aftershocks!
